Lots of kids from Marquette Park, the Lithuanian enclave of Chicago, work in gas stations during high school, but a tour of duty at Zips is for a chosen few.

Not only does Zip run a first class operation, but he caters to the elite of the city. He trains his staff to treat these customers with the utmost consideration. In return Zip looks out for his guys. He acts as their guardian and mentor in life. You dont work many shifts before you meet a judge or a politician. Zip knows them all.Zip has many rules his employees must abide by, but the hardest one is that part time workers must move on after graduation. Young Eddy Pasko doesn’t look forward to leaving Zips, but rules are rules, and none of them are ever waived.

Leaving Zips, which has been his rite of passage, is hard on Eddy. He doesnt know what might lie ahead for him, only that he will be a freshman at DePaul University in the fall.Eddy is an ambitious young guy. Grounded in the solid work ethic and values of his ancestry, he has been further refined by his tutelege under Zip.Eddy has a couple of ambitions in life, one mainstream, the other not so much.

First he wants to be a successful, well-connected businessman. Less mainstream is his romantic needs- and that is to find the girl who would be his life’s companion. Sowing wild oats is something Eddy sees as a waste of time. The story takes the reader through the myriad characters that inhabit Eddys neighborhood from Zip himself to the fearsome Cunningham twins. When Eddy starts a relationship with the beautiful Judy Meade he is enthusiastic but knows he needs to complete college before any serious commitment. But nevertheless the relationship blossoms into true love only to have a tragic ending that seemingly comes out of nowhere.Zip did give Eddy a going away present and one that could never be fairly valued.

He networked Eddy into a part time bartending position at Vincentis Italian Ristorante on Taylor Street in Little Italy. Buzz Vincenti owns one of the highest volume restaurants in all of Chicago and takes Eddy under his wing. Zip had done a great job training Eddy, but Buzz would now groom him and take him to the next level.By his mid twenties Eddy is a successful businessman with a growing list of contacts. All he needs now is the girl of his dreams. He does finally meet her, in the most unlikely place, at the most unlikely time.Deep Eddy is an inspiring story and one that will motivate those who are striving to succeed.

It is also very funny and cleverly written. Eddys determination and strong faith is a model for all young men trying to make their way in life. A period classic.
